What is a Wedi board and what is it made of?

Wedi is a waterproof building board of German manufacture, consisting of high-density rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam coated on both sides with fibreglass mesh and reinforced cement compound. This construction makes the board simultaneously lightweight, strong and fully waterproof — unlike standard drywall or cement boards.
Where are Wedi boards used?

Wedi boards are used primarily in wet areas: in showers (including curbless walk-in showers), bathrooms, swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms. They are also used in underfloor heating constructions, wall cladding in kitchens and commercial food preparation areas, and in bathroom renovations without full removal of existing screeds.
How does Wedi differ from moisture-resistant drywall GKBI?

Moisture-resistant drywall GKBI provides only partial moisture protection: it withstands brief water exposure but deteriorates under prolonged wetting. Wedi is a fully waterproof material suitable for permanently wet areas without additional waterproofing membranes. Wedi is also significantly lighter than cement boards and does not require a reinforced load-bearing substructure.
Is additional waterproofing required when using Wedi?

No — this is one of Wedi's key advantages. The board itself acts as the waterproofing layer. When correctly installed with Wedi Joint Tape for joints and corner profiles, the entire assembly forms a sealed waterproof envelope. This eliminates the need for a separate waterproofing membrane before tiling.
What adhesive should be used for tiling on Wedi?

A flexible C2-class cement-based tile adhesive is recommended — for example Ceresit CM 17, Weber.fix Flex or equivalent. Organic dispersion adhesives are not suitable as they may not provide adequate bond to the cement coating of Wedi. For large-format tiles, adhesive should be applied using the double-buttering method — on both the Wedi board and the back of the tile.
How do you cut Wedi boards?

Wedi is easily cut with a standard utility knife using the same score-snap-score method as drywall: score the cement surface on one side, snap along the line, then score the reverse side. For curved cut-outs for sockets and pipes, a jigsaw is used. Cut edges should be treated with Wedi Sealant to maintain waterproofing around the full perimeter.
How do you fix Wedi to walls and floors?

On walls, boards are bonded directly to the load-bearing substrate (concrete, brick, existing tiles) using Wedi 610 fixing adhesive — no metal frame required. Fixing to a metal stud frame with screws is also possible. On floors, boards are laid on a flat bed of adhesive or levelling compound. All joints must be sealed with Wedi Joint Tape and Wedi Sealant.
Can Wedi be installed over existing tiles?

Yes — this is one of the practical renovation uses of Wedi. Boards are bonded directly onto existing tiles using Wedi 610 adhesive, provided the old tiling is firmly bonded and the surface is sufficiently flat. This allows a bathroom to be completely renovated without the labour-intensive removal of existing cladding and screed.
Is Wedi compatible with underfloor heating?

Yes. Wedi is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating systems. Thanks to the low thermal conductivity of the XPS core, the board directs heat upward while simultaneously acting as a thermal insulator. The heating cable or mat is embedded directly on the Wedi board within the tile adhesive layer.
What are the standard sizes and thicknesses of Wedi boards?

The most common format is 2500×600 mm. Thicknesses: 6 mm (wall renovation overlays), 12 and 25 mm (walls and floors), 50 and 80 mm (thermal insulation and slope-forming floors). How do you build a curbless walk-in shower with Wedi Fundo?

Wedi Fundo is a range of pre-sloped shower tray panels with a factory-formed 2% gradient towards the drain. The tray panel is placed on the floor and the drain is connected. All joints with wall boards and corners are sealed with Wedi Joint Tape and Wedi Sealant. Tiles are then laid on top. The assembly is fully waterproof with no additional waterproofing layer required.
How do you correctly seal Wedi board joints?

All connections — wall-to-wall, wall-to-floor, internal and external corners — are covered with Wedi self-adhesive Joint Tape and coated with Wedi Sealant polyurethane sealant. This is the critical stage of installation: the quality of joint sealing determines the long-term waterproofing performance of the entire system. Standard acrylic or silicone sealant must not be used — only Wedi system materials.
How much lighter is Wedi compared to cement board?

A Wedi board 2500×600×12.5 mm weighs approximately 5–6 kg, whereas a cement board of equivalent size weighs 15–20 kg — approximately three times heavier. This significantly simplifies transport, carrying to upper floors and single-person installation. It is especially important when working on walls and ceilings and when renovating without reinforcing existing floor structures.
How long does a Wedi installation last?

When correctly installed with all joint sealing requirements observed, a Wedi assembly is designed to last for decades. XPS does not rot, does not absorb water and does not support the growth of mould or fungi. The manufacturer claims a service life comparable to traditional wet construction methods (screed and waterproofing membrane), with a significantly simpler and faster installation process.
