Frequently asked questions about the WOOD OIL TIKKURILA VALTTI EC 2,7L
WOOD OIL TIKKURILA VALTTI EC 2,7L — what is this product and what is it used for?
WOOD OIL TIKKURILA VALTTI EC 2,7L is a solvent-based exterior wood oil that protects timber from moisture and dirt and reduces surface cracking. It’s suitable for new or previously oiled wood, including pressure-impregnated untreated timber; intended for garden furniture, terraces and piers.
Which wood types is the oil suitable for — softwood, hardwood or pressure-treated timber?
The oil is suitable for both softwoods and hardwoods; the description explicitly states it is also suitable for pressure-impregnated untreated timber, so it can be used on pressure-treated sawn timber.
What is the coverage of WOOD OIL TIKKURILA VALTTI EC 2,7L per square metre?
Coverage depends on surface condition: old and worn wood 5–7 m²/l, new or well‑conditioned wood 7–15 m²/l. The can is 2.7 litres — use those figures to calculate how much area one can will cover.
Can the oil be applied over previously painted or lacquered surfaces?
The oil is intended for new or previously oiled wood; it generally will not adhere well to painted or lacquered surfaces, so paint or lacquer should be removed to bare wood or compatibility verified before application.
Where is this oil used — is it suitable for terraces, garden furniture and structures near water?
Yes — the description lists outdoor furniture, terraces and piers, so the oil is suitable for wooden terraces, garden furniture and structures located by water.
How to prepare the surface before applying Tikkurila Valtti EC oil?
Remove dirt, loose old coatings and dust; sand old surfaces back to bare wood if necessary. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying the oil.
How many coats of oil should be applied and is sanding between coats necessary?
Typically apply 1–2 coats depending on the wood’s absorbency; older, porous surfaces may need 2 coats. Light sanding (around P120–150) between coats can remove raised fibres and improve adhesion.
Can this oil be used on pressure-treated decking boards?
Yes — the description states suitability for pressure-impregnated untreated timber, so it can be used on pressure-treated decking boards provided the surface is clean and dry.
Is the oil resistant to dirt and moisture — how well does it protect a terrace or furniture?
The oil protects wood from moisture and dirt and reduces cracking; no specific protection period is stated, but the product is intended for exterior use and provides durable protection when maintained periodically.
Is Tikkurila Valtti EC oil suitable for restoring old, greyed wood on a terrace?
Yes — it’s suitable for old and worn surfaces (coverage 5–7 m²/l). Clean and sand back to bare wood before oiling for best results.
